It's weird, but while I buy and love lots of comics from both companies, when Marvel and DC DO disappoint me, it's usually for totally opposite reasons.
DC moves slowly. They don't want to risk ruining their big properties, so they practically never change. Drop "Batman" and come back in five years...it'll be unchanged.
Marvel makes SO many moves SO fast, without stopping to really prosecute any of these ideas to their full potential or their natural conclusions, that none of these grand events really seem to matter. Drop "Avengers" and come back in five years...whatever's happened in the meantime will have been undone, or will have been simply forgotten.
When each company is dropping the ball, there's the same result: stagnation.
Which isn't to say that this true of the companies' work overall! But it's interesting that their strengths are also their weaknesses.
When Marvel is at its best, they're Obama: full of fresh thinking and new perspectives on old institutions. When DC is at its best, they're Falling Water: an idea that was so well thought-out and perfect in its creative execution that only an idiot would ever consider pulling it down...or even just changing it a little and bolting something modern onto it.
I'm glad both companies are around.

Since Bob Barr left the GOP for the Libertarian Party, that could make him the parallel of an Image founder (though the party's been around for decades before him... Maybe Kirkman? There's a zombie joke in there somewhere in relation to the resurrection of Barr's political career)
The late Harry Browne (LP Nominee from '98 and '00)... Has to be something classy yet off the beaten path. Fantagraphics? Tempted to say Kitchen Sink, as it too has departed.
Other candidates matched up with pubilshers?... Hmm.
Outside of the cheap joke of Bill Clinton = Penthouse Comix, I'm stuck.
